Suzuki Academy of Columbia and USC

The Suzuki Academy of Columbia and USC offers private and group lessons in the Suzuki method for violin, viola, cello and guitar for children ages three and above.

About Suzuki Academy of Columbia and USC

The Suzuki Strings at USC program began in 2010 and was renamed Suzuki Academy of Columbia and USC in 2018. The Suzuki Academy is a community music program that uses the Suzuki Method and Philosophy to instruct children as young as three years old on the violin, viola, cello and classical guitar. Currently the Suzuki Academy has about 120 students and instructs these students from the beginning through the high school years.

Suzuki Academy students are enrolled in weekly privately lessons where they are provided with one-on-one instruction to learn new skills and refine those already introduced. Suzuki Academy students also participate in weekly group class lessons which provide the students opportunities for repertoire review, reinforcement of technical skills, and learning ensemble skills. The Suzuki Academy has eight “core” teachers – all of whom have acquired specialized training in the Suzuki Method alongside their traditional music studies. Students at the Suzuki Academy perform regularly in the Columbia community and at the University of South Carolina School of Music.

In addition, the Suzuki Academy is partnered with the Master of Music in Violin/Viola Pedagogy degree program at USC’s School of Music. Within this course of study, university students have the opportunity to learn Suzuki Method Pedagogy by observing and teaching in a working Suzuki Method program.
