Competitive Awards

Southern Studies is pleased to offer a competitive scholarship for undergraduate students and a competitive summer fellowship for graduate students:

Neuffer Family Scholarship in Southern Studies (Two Awards of $5000)

The Neuffer Family Scholarship recognizes exceptional undergraduates who are making the study of the American South a key part of their education here at USC.

This award is for full-time enrolled freshman, sophomores, and juniors (in other words, you cannot be graduating the semester that you apply) who have either taken or are currently in at least one SOST course. To apply:

  • Submit a 2-3 page letter describing your interest in the study of the South, your experiences in SOST courses, and the role Southern Studies plays in your personal and professional goals.
  • Have a non-SOST faculty member submit a letter of recommendation on your behalf.

Both the application letter and the letter of recommendation should be emailed directly to ISS Assistant Director Matthew Simmons, [email protected].

Due Date: April 1st of each year

Awards announced in May.

David G. Ellison Graduate Student Fellowship (One Award of $3000)

The Ellison Fellowship is a graduate student fellowship to support summer research, particularly research leading to the completion of the MA or PhD, for a student in any discipline doing study on the American South. The research must be done the summer of the award; i.e., you may not receive the award in May and defer research to the subsequent summer.

Application packets must include: a brief cover letter; a two-page statement explaining research scope, intent, and how the Fellowship moneys will benefit your research this summer; a budget breakdown; a c.v.; and a recommendation letter from a professor.

Those awarded the fellowship are also required to make to make a public presentation on their research in the fall semester following the summer they receive the fellowship.

Application packets should be emailed directly to ISS

Assistant Director Matthew Simmons, [email protected].

Due Date: April 1st of each year
