Engaging Students Beyond the Classroom
Experiential learning, sometimes referred to as learning by doing, enables students
to apply their in-class learning to real-world situations. As students transfer their
knowledge to settings outside the classroom, they apply their skills in new contexts
to solve novel and complex problems. Ideally after engaging in experiential learning
during their undergraduate experience, students can more easily make the transition
from college to work and will be more engaged members of their communities.
Beyond the Classroom Logistics Support
The Center for Integrative and Experiential Learning is here to help you consider
and plan ways to integrate experiential learning opportunities into your courses and
curricula. Want to get your students out of the classroom and into the community?
Starting Fall 2021 CIEL offers logistical support for any providers who are interested
in planning or expanding a Beyond the Classroom engagement. This could include being
connected with community partners, assistance with travel or ticketing, risk management
and campus policy considerations, and more! Fill out this form to get started.
My USC Experience
We’re proud to announce the new My USC Experience database, which will house all Beyond
the Classroom engagements and Experiential Learning Opportunities. This includes student
organizations, service learning, leadership opportunities, internships, practicum
projects, study abroad and much more. Please reach out to Charlie Pierce if you’d like to add an engagement or make changes to an existing one! If students
are looking for a way to get connected and engaged, send them to the My USC Experience database.
Online Experiential Learning
We encourage the continuance of current ELOs and the development of new proposals
during semesters affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Please see recommendations for
online adaptations or contact CIEL at [email protected] to develop meaningful experiential learning opportunities in an online environment.
