HRSM student builds sports industry career through high-impact experiences

Sports are in Jarett Mayfield’s blood. Born and raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina — nicknamed Football City, USA for the number of professional athletes the city produces — Mayfield is a distant cousin of Minnesota Vikings cornerback Stephon Gilmore and Miami Marlins pitcher Xzavion Curry. His brother is a production assistant for the NBA. Now, as a senior sports and entertainment management major in the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management, Mayfield is poised to forge his own path in the sports industry.

The sport and entertainment management industry offers an incredible array of roles and paths to career success. University of South Carolina alumnus Brannon Desseyn found his niche early, leading to a career as a leader with the world's most prominent ticket sales platforms.

Michael J. Mungo Undergraduate Teaching Award: Armen Shaomian

As a classically trained piano prodigy growing up in Sweden, Armen Shaomian didn’t have what most might consider a traditional childhood. His first concert was at age 9. By 12, he had sold out the Stockholm Royal Concert Hall, where he performed three concerts in the role of Mozart. Today you can find Shaomian at the University of South Carolina, where he works as an associate professor of sport and entertainment management.

His colleagues call him The Spatula. Scott Smith has a knack for recruiting hospitality majors. Time and time again, unwitting students in Smith’s Introduction to Hospitality Management class experience The Spatula firsthand.

USC alumnus Zach Watson completes 29029 hiking challenge

Sometimes a job is more than just a job, and a hike is much more than just a hike. University of South Carolina two-time alumnus Zach Watson has long been aware of the former. This summer, he experienced the latter firsthand as he climbed the 1600-foot Snow King Mountain trail in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, 19 times in less than 36 hours.

Almost 15 years into his career in venue management, Duane Scott, II, is a leader in his field. As vice president of booking and event operations at Toyota Center, home to the NBA’s Rockets, he calls Houston home. Khalid Ballouli’s path to academia took a detour through professional baseball, so it’s only natural this his teaching style is a little different. An associate professor in the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management, Ballouli teaches undergraduate classes in sport and entertainment marketing as well as graduate-level courses in research design and business research and analytics.

Family tradition leads to thriving new business for alumna Maria Colalancia

University of South Carolina alum Maria Colalancia's life changed when she started throwing dinner parties for strangers. Her idea became The Apertivo Society, now a passionate community of thousands of New England-based members all showing up to tables full of strangers for dinner.

Fostering Innovation: Recognizing Innovative Faculty

Each year since 2016, the Center for Teaching Excellence has awarded the Garnet Apple Award for Teaching Innovation that acknowledges USC faculty who consistently demonstrate a commitment to enhancing teaching practices and implementing innovative strategies to enrich student learning experiences. Rwandan native makes sacrifices to build his career — and his country

Aaron Gaga was born in 1987 as an unwelcome refugee in Uganda, his parents having fled his native Rwanda because of conflict. Thirty years after the Rwandan genocide, he is now a graduate student in the University of South Carolina’s highly ranked Master of Sport and Entertainment Management program, pursuing his master's degree in an effort to advance his career and help his country continue to rebuild.

University of South Carolina senior Madelyn Gilliam's drive and ambition, along with opportunities offered by the university's Department of Retailing, are allowing her to build an impressive resume even before graduation.

Sam Todd appointed associate vice president and vice provost for Global Affairs

The Office of the Provost has named Sam Todd to a two-year appointment as associate vice president and vice provost for Global Affairs effective Jan. 29. Todd has worked for the University of South Carolina since 2017 and most recently served as associate dean for faculty, operations and international partnerships in the College of HRSM.

Sports gambling has changed drastically from the days of placing a bet at a Las Vegas casino or finding a neighborhood bookmaker taking wagers on the weekend’s games. So who are these people gambling a few dollars here and there, or risking thousands every week? And what does the explosion of sports gambling and fantasy sports mean for the games? Enter Stephen Shapiro, a sport and entertainment management professor at the University of South Carolina.
