Bio

Professor Smith’s areas of research and teaching are modern Europe, especially France, and comparative business history. His publications include articles on French politics and business in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and two books, Tariff Reform in France, 1860-1900: The Politics of Economic Interest (Cornell University Press, 1980), and The Emergence of Modern Business Enterprise in France, 1800-1930 (Harvard University Press, 2006.

Activities

Since retiring in June 2008, I have done some long-deferred traveling and have been reading broadly beyond European history, looking toward writing short books on the global economy in the twentieth century and on how the world has changed and hasn’t changed in my lifetime. I do not have current plans to return to the classroom, but I am available to work with students informally in my areas of expertise, modern France and business history.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
